Many psychotherapists nurse an unhealthy obsession with trauma and fragility. https://pocketmags.com/au/skeptical-inquirer-magazine/may-june-2018/articles/343086/trauma-and-taboo …pic.twitter.com/t6EmLpR8lh

Here is what the legendary meta-analysis by Rind mentioned in the text was about. It fueled a national firestorm when it came out. Free PDF here: http://psych.colorado.edu/~willcutt/pdfs/Rind_1998.pdf …pic.twitter.com/rrzmr65z0f

So, childhood trauma is not a predictor of adult mental illness. But is adult mental illness a predictor of childhood trauma? Is trauma more common among the mentally ill than among the general population, after accounting for family dysfunction and other confounders?

I am not sure if that has been ever seriously studied. You would have to control for genetic confounds in the 1. place. I am rather sure that most patients with mental illness have no history of abuse; any correlation could be based on genes parents and children have in common.

To the man with a hammer, everything looks like a nail. There are hundreds of thousands of people who think they are good at treating people with what they think is childhood trauma, and they will not stop.

Some time ago I tried to investigate motivations underlying the extreme response to paedophiles.I asked: "if it cd be demonstrated access to child porn (produced w/out harm to kids), lowered paedophiles' offending rates, wd u support it?" Almost no one wd respond or even engage

It is my belief that what drives most of our moral instincts is an aversion to unearned or illegitimate pleasure and it needn't involve any consequentialist concerns over pain of others. Hence the widespread condemnation and illegality of non medicinal drugs
