Effective therapists self-diclose selectively, for effect. The effect should be therapeutic for the client, not merely gratifying for the therapist. Sharing personal beliefs with extremely rigid clients can be the basis for teaching them how to relate more flexibly with others.

Both Trump and Clinton seem to push people's emotional buttons much more strongly than other political figures in the past have. I have never had so many clients mention politics in their therapy sessions as during the past 2 years. It leads to disordered thinking on both sides.

Political discussion in therapy can be a reflection of disposition and temperament. I've found it useful to discuss my evolving socio-political views as they pertain to my relationships and my self-image. My therapist does well in curtailing his views but he is also human.
