I agree. For starters, high SES people have more daughters than low SES people, so you could just be looking at an effect like "when buying two backpacks of the same type, people spend less per pack than when buying one."

I was one of the reviewers on that paper, and I think it's pretty cool to use big data from an online Chinese retailer to test a basic hypothesis from parental investment theory.

Low economic status & v. limited resources- invest in daughters as economic status doesn't determine pairing, looks do. They get better results investing in daughters. High economic status- daughters do fine with no extra push. Investing extra in sons, chance of hitting bigtime.
