Psychotherapy research is deeply flawed because it examines the efficacy of psychotherapies and not of psychotherapists (among which there is huge variance).

There are tonnes of studies on therapist factors and therapist effects. The evidence does not generally support that there is "huge" variance between therapists (many studies often failing to find significant therapist effects), although it is sometimes a factor.
