How is "instinct" even considered a "reason"? I guess they mean that they don't know what the reason is, but then it shouldn't be called a reason.

Not a reason, but a motivation. More precise question would’ve been “what motivated you to have kids?”. Pretty sure that 50% of the time it’s accidental. Labeling an accident “instinct” may be a motivation one can better live with.

There is no evolutionary pressure for the decision to have children – in a natural environment, the sex drive is sufficient. "Postponing having children" was never an option.

@jordanbpeterson "For company" and "Look after me and take over" as well as many others on the list sound like bad reasons to want kids. Makes me concerned for the kids' sake if parents were to remain in that mindset, which hints at Oedipal mother behavior (from the mom or dad)Thanks. What about 'accidents'? Aren't many births unintended?

Accidents is literally one of the choices of the poll.

Instinct drives much more human behaviour than we think, not just wanting to have children. It plays a fundamental role in investing as well. Just interview a guy who are losing 30, 50% of its capital on a investment, and all you will see is a "raging animal trying to survive".

I see "I wish to punish humanity" did not make it to the list...
