Interesting. But what real difference does it make whether we manipulate thought symbols and conclude that there is or isn't free will?

If you didn't have 'free will' in the sense they mean, you would notice right away. You would try to do something and it wouldn't happen. Indeed this does in fact happen from time to time, but not often.

However, you only have free will with respect to physics. Philosophically speaking, you can't have free will. You may cause your actions, but you can't cause yourself: it's still deterministic.
