That's been worrying me too. A related thought of mine is that "stigma", although it can be painful, may fill an important social function by reinforcing positive expectations for coping.
Probably not though. For a long time people thought trauma was rare and adverse reactions to trauma were the norm. It is actually the opposite. So not sure that the old idea would likely be much more problematic now than it was then.

The phenomenon you describe is well understood in the literature. The number of people who present w/ PTSD who are ‘playing victim’ is vanishingly small.
