I'm not sure I find it that surprising, just from my own (long past) brief work on the subject I remember *a lot* of feedback along the lines that defaulting towards an action was seen as unethical or at least problematical, especially with regard to, e.g., organ donorship.

That is true. The paper should have clarified a bit more if the reluctance stems from not knowing, not believing in, or perhaps not APPROVING of the effect.

Similarly, if folk complain that your good or service is too expensive, try making two more options: a cheap one and an expensive one. Offer all three, and your main product will get more sales.
