@curryja , Lindzen, Singer and others are not any more "fringe" than Vavilov was. And to call Dyson "fringe" shows you do -

The word "science" is being used too loosely. Only certain kinds of "science", not, for example, high energy physics or molecular biology.

Fringes reject data they don't agree with. But US parties are not "right & left". Republicans deny all science, evolution to climate.

Liberals reject science when they reject inoculations. Everyone can reject science when it is inconsistent with their beliefs.
