Instinct is hard to come by for them, it is a cold empty reality based on rules.
At 4-5 instead of rushing to the toy shed to squabble over the best toys I would rush to a particular vantage as it had a good view.
Even at that age I was recognizing that a) I didn't need or want those things but they did and b) wasn't worth squabbling over.
In our society you learn very quickly that if you are selfless with everyone, people will take advantage. Some don't survive those lessons.
