Since most find that becoming thin/muscular is quite hard, perhaps this is a rational bit of irrationality.

Is there an evolutionary advantage to this kind of misperception? Perhaps by calibrating to aim for physiques one degree too extreme we actually increase our likelihood of landing in the Goldilocks zone.

In my experience, the pressure I felt to be very thin always came chiefly from the advertising industry or from films and TV and only very rarely from actual real-life men. None of my partners ever much cared about my weight.

Why everyone hates themselves. Is this an evolutionary driver to always be more fit/attractive? ESP for dudes to be strong?

The desire to strive for better (it's not hate, it's just lack of self-complacency) definitely can lead to higher value on sexual market and the ability to attract more valuable mate.
