"Most American adults eat roughly twice the recommended intake of protein — including vegetarians, who consume 70 percent more than they need."

If the 4:1 (20%) ratio applies to humans, the
@US_FDA DV for protein (50g / 2000 calories, or 10% calories from protein) would be 2x lower than our bodies want, which would mean that 70% more than we “need” is still 18% (2/1.7) less than our bodies want.

A related perspective, the “protein leverage hypothesis”, explains how appetite for protein may drive total caloric consumption: https://academic.oup.com/beheco/article/20/4/685/242602 … and https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protein_leverage_hypothesis …pic.twitter.com/QlxvQzqQqU

This makes a lot of sense. Visually it seems like food is increasingly lower in animal protein because of cost considerations.

I need to supplement my diet I think... Meat is expensive (and I’m not a huge fan of it).
