I found the opposite to be true when hiking to a Rock Climb. I assumed it was anticipation that "made time fly" on the way there. And exhaustion plus nothing to look forward to when hiking back to the car.

Perhaps you were absorbed in the hike to the degree that it blended in with the climb? And perhaps you weren’t absorbed in the hike back? Thus the difference... in one case you weren’t “looking” forward or backward, but mostly inward (during hike to & climb?)

This seems to be the case. I thought the pattern was time flies when you're having fun.

Similar to how a hungry, bored elementary student feels the 2 minute walk to lunch vs the 2 minute walk back to class after lunch. In both cases, it is 2 minutes of “clock” time, but each case is felt w a different rhythm & tempo (tempo-rality)
