i am finding that it is not "screen time" in general but social media in particular, and for girls, that is associated with depression/anxiety. and this study does note exception for heavy social media use. I don't know about social skills but attention spans have definitely declined

Depends what attention you measure. If someone is spending 8 hours paying attention to Minecraft but can't read a novel, it's probably not due to ability to attend but a strong preference to play Minecraft rather than read.
