Most transfers of microbiomes are positive. The bacteria acts as a first line of defense. And perhaps by touching our faces after shaking someone's hand we get access to some of their protective layer. It also builds trust if we smell the same. Just my crazy theories.

Self-face-touching might produce some olfactory related response, but mainly I propose it is a way of stimulation in socially ambivalent or more broadly complex situations. It can manifest in scratching your head, beard, playing with your hair. Minor ticks like that.
