Interesting article but please be mindful. It doesn't increase (cause), it's associated/correlates with a higher probability of reaching 90. The authors on the text use "association".

In all animal experiments in which this was ever tested, moderate alcohol increased lifespan. Note that the case against tobacco wasn't settled by correlational human data, but by animal experiments, too.https://twitter.com/DegenRolf/status/867422664742273025?s=20 …

The problem is the moderation.

Super interesting, but to read "even if controlling for all conceivable confounders" is a horrifying experience.

Most people drink moderately, and most don't make it to 90. The ones who do are genetically blessed. I don't think alcohol gives them a leg up. I just think the small group that gets to 90 are still going to have mostly moderate drinkers, and that alcohol isn't a major factor

Many don’t drink at all and many drink a lot. Ethanol lowers mTOR in humans, kills Heliobacter Pylori and extends lifespan by 50% in worms.

Interesting. Is there a defined mechanism or is this correlation-only?

Lowers mTOR. Becomes more important in old age.
