Commenters encounter more diverging than consenting opinions on YouTube, showing for the umpteenth time that echo chambers are just a figment of the intellectual imagination. https://computationalcommunication.org/ccr/article/view/15 …pic.twitter.com/aCxwtbzanP

I wouldn’t say it disproves anything. You’re ignoring how humans act both systemically and in groups. Dissenting opinions only strengthen echo chambers. Honestly, I don’t think you can have the echo chamber effect without diverging opinions.

If you systematically follow the research, especially high quality studies, the lesson is clear: People encounter more opposing views online than face to face. The case is settled. Other people are not dumber than ourselves.

That may be true but this doesn't show under what context and in who's company. It doesn't show friend groups or pages or who they're sharing the content with.

These has always seemed somewhat "obvious" to me - how many people build friendship groups with people who regularly vocally disagree with them on serious issues? At work you don't discuss serious stuff. Online its a free for all - for better & worse (more of the former IMO).

I've had an epiphany about Twitter 💡 Brain development is incomplete until the age of 25. Long term planning and risk management abilities develop last. It's not that the world has gone mad, it's that Twitter is swarming with kids behind accounts we assume belong to adults.

And that’s exactly why the echo chamber theory still holds. Too much conflicting information everywhere. People get used to it, largely tune it out, or they look for their in group’s responses to gauge their own response to diverging opinions.

With so many conflicting opinions out there what do you expect people to do? Expend the mental energy to consider them all or critically think? Just because they’re exposed to diverging opinions, it doesn’t mean people aren’t already making mental shortcuts to process them
