These, as well as the hieroglyphs, are not alphabetical. They denote syllables, which requires many hundreds of signs for writing.

Since a letter is a graphic image, the beginning of all literacy is by definition illiterate, it consists of relating those graphic images to existing speech and meaning, fixing meaning in graphic symbols.
