Robin Dunbar argues that religion evolved to allow humans to live together in previously unknown large-scale communities without killing each other. https://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:259dc012-8806-4ca6-92f2-2eaf1ff6c002 …pic.twitter.com/lWSgDVdT1Q

I think previous theories focused on religion promoting cooperation in large scale groups, not making them possible in the first place. BTW, the link is free full text.

"this was not a matter of merely inventing a tool to make cooperation easier, it was the use of top down force (engineering social cohesion) to remove the genes of those who couldn't self hypnotise into being a part of a greater whole."

One could see how this paradoxically makes us more tolerant AND more ethnocentric at the same time. Obedience to the religion creates homogeneity in the Gene's while the close quarters makes us tolerant of having our territory invaded. It's a total paradox that leads us to

It is very interesting but I find it incomplete: * Neolithic religion differed radically from subsequent religious emphases * religions progressively advanced in insights & produced different types of societies with differing levels of evolutionary success

        * The real breakthrough here is the idea of a neolithic substrate as the primitive religious form acting as both a bonding mechanism and is the reason for sectarianism * Like the 'weak nuclear force', this substrate is strong at very short distance
