Yentl and Laurens are identical twins. Although their genes are virtually identical, they are of different gender. https://www.gelderlander.nl/arnhem/geboren-als-eeneiige-tweelingzussen-zijn-laurens-en-yentl-nu-broer-en-zus-toen-ik-17-was-viel-voor-mij-het-kwartje~a607c0d1/?referrer=https://l.facebook.com/ … https://www.photoawards.com/winner/zoom.php?eid=8-148351-17 …pic.twitter.com/RKL5taW3Wo

OK, geneticists (and Bayesians) out there. Does this provide evidence for or against transgenderism being genetic? If not genetic, then what? And any legal or social consequences of that?

There are studies which have looked at the behavioral genetics of transness based on concordant and discordant twin pairs, and they've found 50% heritability.

However, these are unsystematic as they are based on published case studies. IIRC more-systematic studies of the heritability of gender dysphoria within the general population have found high heritability in childhood and low in adulthood.

I was able to find two case-review based twin studies on the wikipedia page for gender dysphoria, but they come out with different concordance rates. Where are you getting 50% heritability from? https://www.jsm.jsexmed.org/article/S1743-6095(15)33906-0/fulltext …https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/15532739.2013.750222 …

Ooops, searching through my notes, it appears that the 50% estimate wasn't from case studies, but from this: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12211624

Note, by the way, that concordance rate is not the same as heritability, and that depending on the prevalence, the concordance rate can be essentially zero even for a highly heritable trait.

E.g. if transness is a 4 sigma phenomenon, then with a 50% heritability, an identical twin of a trans person would on average be only 2 sigma increased in trans liability, which would translate to them having 2.1% probability of being trans too (I think, might've messed up math).

If those numbers are even roughly correct, that's quite interesting! To think you have a 2% chance of sharing that trait with a genetically identical twin. Makes one wonder how accurately those numbers can be determined...but also what besides genetics is going on exactly.

The actual concordance rate from other studies seems to be much higher than 2%. ~30% seems to be in the ballpark.

If it helps, there has been some preliminary work on identifying alleles associated with sex hormone signal pathways in the trans population. So I think it's fairly safe to conclude there are genetic factors at work.https://academic.oup.com/jcem/article-abstract/104/2/390/5104458 …

To be honest I don't expect sex hormone signal pathways to have that much effect. Presumably their effect would primarily work through masculine/feminine psychology; but gender-atypical psychology doesn't seem to correlate *that* much with gender dissatisfaction.
