Sleeping fewer hours than experts recommend had no negative effects on brain and cognition in large scale long term study. https://academic.oup.com/sleep/advance-article/doi/10.1093/sleep/zsz290/5697049 …pic.twitter.com/q6MzaAcoke

Interesting, & read in detail. Initial caution: people "self-reported sleep duration at five time points between 1985 & 2013." There's no worse way to measure people's behaviour than by asking them! Many variables may have affected reliability of answers. But still interesting

Especially true for an activity that you’re unconscious for... 😅

Or it could be that people who need less sleep to function are the ones sleeping less and thus maintaining cognitive abilities, while those who need more sleep are sleeping more. I bet the people not getting enough sleep (relative to their needs) would be an interesting study.

It would be, but we have to live with that research limitation, since we can’t ethically mesure that with any reliability. At the end of the day, better is what makes feel good and healthy regardless

However the benefits of 8 -10 hours sleep goes unremarked.

@willahmed Nothing on physical recovery/performance, obviously✅ No other qualifiers/factors (diet, nutrition, exercise, strain, quality of sleep, stages of sleep, etc.) were considered. Maybe it wasn’t their goal, but the breadth is narrow in my opinion. Thoughts? Ha.

It’s self reported hours of sleep which we know varies wildly from actual hours of sleep.
