Here's a really interesting report on the politics and asymmetries of Twitter users, from @knightfdn, well summarized by Evette Treewater Alexander: https://medium.com/informed-and-engaged/polarization-in-the-twittersphere-what-86-million-tweets-reveal-about-the-political-makeup-of-b9ca87ca57ae …pic.twitter.com/94ztT9nMFi

A study by Pew Research that used self-reported political affiliation came to different conclusions about Twitter users. Results seem to be very sensitive to the criterion you apply. https://www.pewresearch.org/internet/2019/04/24/sizing-up-twitter-users/ …pic.twitter.com/gglL9dY7O4

      Self-reporting is notoriously unreliable

Yes. But letting researchers choose the criteria by which people are assigned to ideology is prone to subjectivity and bias. I am not sure which is more telling.

I agree 100%. I was just thinking political donation, voting habits & affiliation with known political entities would be a more reliable indicator of political affiliation . But media diet is more much more subjective yet does tell us something..

How about they do neither, and just provide the raw data of % of twitters who are pro it anti choice, pro or anti marijuana legalization, pro or anti 2a, etc. Labeling any of those things as left or right is divisive for its own sake.

Hmm... I think the Pew and Knight results are compatible. The two different scales aren't supposed to perfectly map onto each other. Scores derived from preferences are generally more useful. Different groups interpret the scales very differently so self-reporting heavily biased

So it is technically correct for Knight to use derived ideology scores. Not an issue of researcher subjectivity. Interpreting the scores is trickier though, and, if I'm reading the report correctly, the Knight foundation does that incorrectly
