There was practically no connection between parenting style and children's personality traits. https://www.ideals.illinois.edu/bitstream/handle/2142/105686/AYOUB-DISSERTATION-2019.pdf?sequence=1&isAllowed=y …pic.twitter.com/YuRSrrQUyJ

Was the contributing factor genetics or peer group? And thanks for the link to the dissertation.

The study design can't answer that. From behavior genetic research, the causes should be genes and idiosyncratic experiences, to about the same degree.

I think any parent with more than one child has lived this truth

This makes sense because "character" and "personality" are not the same thing. As a parent I don't want to shape the way my kids' personhood develops, but I do want to give them sound ethics and inclusive metaphysics as they *learn*. If those are sound then I've done my bit.

I would’ve been shocked if they found otherwise. OTOH, I’m 98% sure that parents can have big impacts on maturation (or not) of emotion-mediated reasoning (moral judgments, patience, kindness, self-reflection, self-regulation, etc.). And those count A LOT.

What about the parents’ own personalities? Subtle difference but does affect parenting style. I would imagine there is correlation as personality traits are heritable?

Does child abuse count as a parenting style in this study? Because I've doubts that this wouldn't at some point effect a child's personality if it gets severe enough (especially if it includes things that obviously effect development like social isolation).

Though that's probably not the question this study wanted to answer and that's fine.

I'd point out, though, that you're talking about personality. It's also obviously true, imo, that culture and general ideology of ideas departed onto children, habits, etc., are massively impactful onto a child's life and behaviors. So, you can't change some fundamental parts...
