We use it to mix sound for tv and film. I think the idea is that when the lights are dim....our other senses are triggered to engage more. Or at least that's the theory I was told. Not sure if there's any evidence.

I'm curious and love to hop atop the hard work of social scientists to let my intuition run free: Maybe dim lighting lowers self-regulation/awareness? Thinking of danceclubs that turn lights on at 3am. It's like everyone shares a dreadfully sobering return to self-awareness.

Casinos are like that for a reason. That is also why alcohol is liberally served by roaming servers too...to get gamblers gradually drink so their judgement goes down the tubes as they become intoxicated.
