Cognitive dissonance, a cornerstone of social psychology enshrined in its textbooks, is anything but an established fact. https://www.psychologytoday.com/intl/blog/how-do-you-know/201912/theres-no-secret-sauce-in-science …pic.twitter.com/kzS5EANKEc

Do we have any sense of what kinds of things you have to do to make cognitive dissonance happen in the lab?

Are we talking about tweaks that shouldn't affect the results, like the color or the walls, or the temperature in the room? Or is it stuff that you'd expect would make a difference, like calling the person's attention to the conflict between their beliefs?

DiFFiCULT TO REPRODUCE doesn't mean it don't exist. It only means you are not sufficiently good at your job. Or: Oh, soufflés are hard to get right, therefore all chefs should only concern themselves with Big Macs. A PhD whining in an article don't disqualify the research.

If it is difficult to reproduce under tightly controlled lab conditions, how will it ever apply to real life, which is messy and unpredictable? But psychologists get payed to generate laws that DO apply in real life. That is why we have them.

The premise that believing contrary suppositions causes stress seems doubtful. If doing so's advantageous, evolution would select for this capacity. By contrast, the ubiquity of self-deception & its political utility appear to be well-established psych findings.

The reason I always suspected it was unimportant is because the phrase is exclusively (mis)used to mean its opposite.

Yep. Almost every reference to "Cognitive dissonance" is actually much closer to (or even precisely) Doublethink.

"...and be motivated to find a way to resolve it". Most are very quickly very able to resolve these which is why it is hard to create the situation of ongoing stress related to these matters.

A lot of psychologists use language in their tests that they think should provide contradictions for their subjects, but they do not seem to see that the 'one rule for me and one rule for that group' is a perfectly valid opinion to hold...
