I haven‘t read the paper, but could this effect be explained by demographic shift? As more of the population is older, those older couples probably have less sex

hypothesis: here the averages are meaningless as there's a highly bimodal (desirables w/ sex, undesirables w/o sex) distribution, each being quite far from the average. change in average only reflects shifting balance between the modes; sex clusters tighter near the top (20%?)

I believe this decline is driven by an exponential increase in single mothers who remarried for economic convenience. If you love the paycheck over the man, not a surprise
