Very few criminals self-ID as atheists, but a significant fraction ID as non-religious or unknown. I think the explicit use or non-use of the atheist label here is misleading and underestimates the secularity of prisoners.

That is true. But the mere fact that prisoners won't self identify as atheists is interesting and invites speculation.

Not very meaningful without base rates. Also being atheist could be correlated with other properties like SES that have a more relevant bearing on the question of criminality.
