Could this be an outcome of increasing professionalism? I would predict that the home advantage would be more pronounced in amateur sports on account of that they seldom engage psychologists at that level.

I saw a study which attributed this bias to referees being subtlety intimidated by home crowds - and with increased professionalism and technological innovation in refereeing it’s easy to see why this bias might decline

Maybe home advantage is a result of the effects of travel but not spectaculars, such that if teams are doing a better job of reducing the effects of travel then the effects of home field advantage start to go away
