Arguably this rugged individualism reflects the ethos of the original Wild West, the barbarous Western Roman provinces & adjacent Germania. The Catholic church help stabilize these chaotic regions, the resulting civil orders reflecting their recent rough origins.

The researchers are wondering themselves why they did it. Could have served the spread of Christianity, telling believers they are the real brothers and sisters, lessening clan influence. Or could have been about inheritance.
