Radical new theory, positing that the medieval Catholic church laid the foundation for the modern (WEIRD) Western mind, finally published in "Science" (free full text.) https://science.sciencemag.org/content/366/6466/eaau5141 … Already presented here in June 2018 https://twitter.com/DegenRolf/status/1010177903538200577 …pic.twitter.com/EEMLEJiHwe

Nothing that new, nothing that radical, but very much of explanatory power & robustness to falsification attempts. Or what do you think, @JayMan471 @hbdchick ?

Arguably this rugged individualism reflects the ethos of the original Wild West, the barbarous Western Roman provinces & adjacent Germania. The Catholic church help stabilize these chaotic regions, the resulting civil orders reflecting their recent rough origins.

I thought this was well-established? I haven't read the paper, but how is it different from the decade-old book by Rodney Stark?https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000SEV7OQ/ …

The researchers are wondering themselves why they did it. Could have served the spread of Christianity, telling believers they are the real brothers and sisters, lessening clan influence. Or could have been about inheritance.
