How did they choose the people "high in emphatic concern"? Because their responses to the rest of the survey would rule them out from my definition. Sounds ripe for selection bias

i believe that the idea of helping other people solely on because it feels nice to do so is misguided. it falls apart when it feels nice to hurt others. though like others said, empathy in this case is not clearly defined.

Surely if you're only empathic to your "in group" - whatever that is - you're not properly empathic. Empathy applies to imagining yourself in the shoes of all others. Doesn't it?

The late criticism of empathy is that it is always partisan, greater empathy of a mother for own versus other's child, greater empathy for known individuals versus unknown larger groups ect....

Seems like those who claim to be empathic to others are actually just self-emphatic

empathy doesn’t necessarily mean compassion or sympathy or agreement or affection. Just the ability to understand others situation as if you were them. It’s probably true that the very worst of tyrants are the most empathetic; how else would you know how to make others suffer?

Doesn't empatic concern rime badly with schadenfreude?
