But were pessimists at least still more accurate about their life expectancy?

This. Being healthy, earning a good living etc probably makes people more optimistic on average.

The study directly addresses this, and thanks to its longitudinal nature is able to tease apart the bidirectional causation at work here.https://twitter.com/scottleibrand/status/1196467107543867397 …

This is a well-done study showing how optimism causally predicts future mortality (40y later). Positive socioeconomic factors cause (justified) optimism, but optimism independently also promotes effective self-investment (in learning etc.) that further reduces later mortality. https://twitter.com/DegenRolf/status/1190567611194585088 … pic.twitter.com/HhCwN3cYnl

Optimism minimizes regret mathematicians say (e.g. UCB algorithm), reason being that optimism favors learning hence reduces future regret. Unfounded optimism does not seem useful from this standpoint. But that's only one standpoint

Any details on what "optimism's independant influence on mortality" consists of ?

These studies are known to be garbage and full of holes. Optimism may be good but this is not a good argument for why
