Are the terms relative rather than absolute? If my politics were slightly left-of-centre in the 1990s, is it possible they’re now considered slightly right-of-centre in the 2010s, because the culture has moved leftwards while I’ve stayed consistent in my views?

Remember that the strongest trend toward Conservatism was in self-definition as being a conservative, less in specific attitudes.

since conservatives have more kids, more people are descended from conservatives. so more people have experience of conservative parents & grandparents. probably where part of the stereotype comes from.
