There is no evidence of male homosexuality from prehistory, the oldest indications are from Ancient Egypt, and in many hunter-gatherer and non-stratified societies it seems to be absent. https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article/metrics?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0134817#discussedHeader …pic.twitter.com/Sab900F2bM

May it be that such evidence requires writing to exist in the first place?

Exactly what I was thinking. Isn't the author saying, "We have no records of something happening from before there were records"? Or maybe I just don't understand the nature of the phrase PRE-history?

In order for homosexuality to persist, there must be a balancing selection, i.e. increased reproduction among gays' kin. It needs a certain population density and stratification for this to happen, as the paper argues. Fits with recent genome wide results.

I am not trying to refute the main contention of the article. I am saying that the argument: "No source of evidence has demonstrated the existence of homosexual preferences in prehistoric society" is an example of bad logic and proves nothing.

OK. It is just, they aren't just saying there is no prehistoric evidence, it is that it is theoretically expected that there is none. That is a step more.

Doesn't that make the theory unprovable? It sounds like you are saying the authors are claiming that the lack of data from a time WHEN NO DATA EXISTS confirms their theory. What am I missing here?
