The fact that it is somewhat unclear whether a whole class of highly paid professionals are even really contributing to society should at least raise one eyebrow. Possibly both.

A life where you work 5/7 days, 8 hrs+, until your 65, is inherently depressing. When that work comes at the expense of family and social ties, no doubt, the animal will become sick. We know social animals need to be social, but still seem to think we're not animals.

Exercise is the best & most underutilized treatment for mental illness. There are certain drugs that can put you more in the mood for exercise, but that's about as far as it'll get you.

How much can you change the brain? It all comes down to that. As with the body, there are limits. Athletics is easier to visualize. A slow runner may, with the right training, increase his speed. But will he ever be able as fast as the best or even average? Probably not.
