Roy Baumeister argues that Twitter has vilified his brainchild, ego depletion, to a point that believers fell silent, for fear of being shamed. https://psyarxiv.com/uf3cn/ pic.twitter.com/AYYsawqyIr

Given that I have posted more than a dozen reports critical of ego depletion, Baumeister's complaint may well be directed at me too. If it came across as bullying, I am sorry. I regard Baumeister as a towering figure of the field. But how do we set the scientific record straight?

I never even suggested him being a fraud. There are thousand ways a scientist may unwittingly find positive evidence for an untenable theory. I find it hard to judge the critique of the failed replications in the text. But they would at least question the practical significance.

It’s terrible for him. He believes in ego depletion and his methodology was correct when the work was done. Now it can’t be replicated and he is called a fraud.

You set the record straight by dispassionate rigor. Roy has a high reputation, for sure. I met him 20 years ago at a Personality Psychology conference. Giants only fall when they can't take proper scrutiny and can't back up their claims. Your choice.

Wow that’s a shame he feels that way. It could be he would lump you in as you say. Twitter can act as an amplifier for the wrong message OR a great democratic leveling platform where every voice is equal. Kind of depends on which side one is on how they see it I guess :(

Seen from a clinical psychological perspective ego depletion makes sense - whatever and however it is measured scientifically. I reckon that this concept is also at play in sleep deprivation and treatment of depression
