Given that I have posted more than a dozen reports critical of ego depletion, Baumeister's complaint may well be directed at me too. If it came across as bullying, I am sorry. I regard Baumeister as a towering figure of the field. But how do we set the scientific record straight?

I never even suggested him being a fraud. There are thousand ways a scientist may unwittingly find positive evidence for an untenable theory. I find it hard to judge the critique of the failed replications in the text. But they would at least question the practical significance.

More from Roy Baumeister on why he thinks his theory of ego depletion is still valid and was unjustly dumped on. (Many methodological details in the full text.) https://psyarxiv.com/uf3cn/ pic.twitter.com/UwTtwBkAlP

Huh. I’ve been critical of ego depletion methods and inferences going back to the ‘98 paper, but I’ve never told Baumeister due to their power in areas to which I aspire. What can one reasonably infer if they hear only from their silent supporters and not their silent critics?

I’d agree that there has been this pile-on effect, which I think is partially justified. But I think the studies and book (Willpower) are still important and timely and should be read, analysed, and not dismissed as casually as they have been on here
