So - this trait confers a reproductive advantage upon others (and therefore a relative disadvantage upon the individual). Is that not a direct example of a trait that would be naturally selected against? And if there's no population-level advantage, why would this trait survive?

I'm no evolutionary biology and am not familiar with the pertinent literature, but I think that the case is just being overstated. Evolution clearly does care about population-level advantages insofar as they help individuals reproduce. Hence altruism, etc.
