Mind-boggling theory on why we fidget: To resolve uncertainty, the predictive brain grasps at evidence for the agent's own existence https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0732118X19300923 … Great primer: Perceptions are 90 percent expectations https://drive.google.com/open?id=1VCx7DzPcLAeijWGgAzit7gg5aHZG0vsu …pic.twitter.com/WWcfwVOh1n

Great point. Actually, the text addresses this, and related stuff, like meditation etc

We believe that fidgeting (we would call it ‘displacement behaviour’) does have a very clear function – stress regulation (https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.3109/10253890.2012.707709 …). Interestingly, there appears to be a sex difference in this function…works for men, but not women (https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0056355 …).pic.twitter.com/htDzprooKp

I wonder if self-cutting is just farther down the continuum of confirming existence...

More trivially, to estimate body posture you have to move to get strong signals from proprioceptive and inner ear sensors .

Huh. I'd expect that voluntarily holding still would make for an even better match between action and prediction.

This might explain some "out of body" experiences, or dissolution of self in meditation. If one remains still enough for long enough, there is no need to predict your self into your own mental model. You predict yourself out of existence!
