Inclusive fitness hypothesis to consider, that people may indeed be looking at condemning wrongdoers for the safety and prosperity of their fellow people, in turn benefiting themselves. If there is some sort of dopaminergic reinforcement or warm and fuzzies, meant to be this way.
It's Life protecting itself (through people - in the case of the human species).
Perhaps it's a form of talking to oneself which we ALL do (or at least I'm told).
Or maybe people condemn wrongdoers because they think it's wrong without giving any thought whatsoever to their reputation.
But you can still give thought to your self-narrative. This is what a good person would do and I am a good person.
