Number 1 rule of life is do not compare yourself (both favourably and unfavourably) to anyone else. That is completely different from putting yourself in another’s shoes; that brings empathy.

An interesting set of studies for sure. From a skim-read though, they're not all consistent with comparisons on social media being "remarkably frequent". Study 5 participants reported a mean of just over 2 such comparisons (median = 1) naturally occurring in a two-week period!

Three of the other studies used a design where participants were asked whether or not they had made a comparison after viewing each of a series of social media posts. That method might inflate how many comparisons participants make.

I learned early there's no point in doing that. It doesn't make sense, doesn't make me happy, and is generally uninteresting.
