Trigger warnings didn't deliver the slightest emotional benefits to trauma survivors, but made them more likely to define themselves through trauma, which can ring in a self-fulfilling prophecy. https://osf.io/axn6z/ pic.twitter.com/t9xliPDjWW

In the whole debate about trigger warnings for potentially traumatic content, it is often forgotten that resilience is the default, not the rare exception. Which was the message of what encouragingly turned out to be one of my most-read posts ever:https://twitter.com/DegenRolf/status/948846659995357185 …

Just reread one of the most important and elevating psychology papers: The vast majority of people do not break under traumatic experiences. Resilience is the default, not the rare exception. pic.twitter.com/hmzo0mCioQ

Are trigger warnings even meant to reduce anxiety when one is exposed to the content? I thought the point was to warn people so they can decide if they want to view the content at all.

In the educational environment, they are designed to mentally prepare the vulnerable for the upcoming exposure. That part won't work.

What's the point of a warning if they had to read it anyway? I thought trigger warnings help people avoid disturbing content.

Cool and might be true, but: 1) it's a preprint 2) it has not been peer reviewed yet 3) the analysis can still be rejected

But since the advent of the reproducibility crisis, peer review is no longer seen as the arbiter of good science, and preprints have become far more important. Also, Richard McNally is one of the most renowned researchers in the field of trauma and PTSD.

Better study: do trigger warnings deter trauma survivors from consuming content?

“...warnings didn't deliver the slightest emotional benefits...” That’s why they push this. The point is to imprison students in a cage of misery that they cannot reassess.

Not surprised at all, tbh. The whole point of overcoming your trauma is to stop being defined by it. "Trigger warnings" directly contradict that purpose.
