The vast majority of victims of aggression in urban public spaces received help from at least one bystander, throwing over decades of psychological research testifying to bystander apathy. https://psycnet.apa.org/record/2019-30180-001 …pic.twitter.com/0V8Qkl7wtw

Is this the Kitty Genovese thing again? I really wonder that nobody actually helped as we were all taught.

Later historical research suggests the police were the origin of the fake "the whole neighborhood saw it but nobody did anything" story, perhaps to divert attention away from a slow response to the crime scene. Truth is people called police, Genovese died in a neighbor's arms

The Kitty Genovese case also had an incredible, if unreported ending, with the Killer caught BECAUSE of bystander activity. https://twitter.com/DegenRolf/status/868015355180003330 … The whole case is a cautionary tale about fake news leading psychology - and humankind - astray.

And yet generations of psychology students were taught that people basically suck. I never accepted it. Hundreds of New Yorkers are just going to sit there and do nothing?
