AFAIK: Hippocampus is a 'repeater' thereby converting state to short term memory, and to long term, by continuous recursive free association, whereas thalamus (you) seizes opportunities to focus upon, and uses frontal lobe to incrementally and recursively consider seizing them.

AFAIK: The medial temporal lobe provides resources to the hippocampus, and like most of the nervous system, the Hippocampus cannot be divorced from the cortical material that serves it.
