The old tradition of sitting with the dead one in a "wake" seems to be keeping them company as life entirely ebbs away.

Yes, my grandmother used to play that role in our local community. A nurse during the war, in the 1950s & 60s she used to 'lay out' the dead, wash, dress and sit with them though the day and night. When a close family friend died, she taught me "to sit the night". I was seven.
