This has almost zero relevance to Darwin’s astonishment. The study is only about color. Many birds are more brightly colored than peacocks. The thing that stands out, the thing that astonished Darwin, is the size.

Greater feather size implies more motion to be detected by predators, more energy expended to grow, and an increased burden to drag around.

Isn’t it more about the bulk and the weight of the tail that makes running/flying away extremely difficult? The colors seem to me rather irrelevant given that the feathers are tucked away most of the time anyway...
