I'm franky incredulous that, on a planet full of hierarchical herd creatures, only we are supposedly obsessed with self-image. Surely such self-centeredness is adaptive for rising in the herd. How can you survive herd politics without caring about how others view your?

Only we have the specific cognitive ability to put ourselves into the perspective of others viewing and judging us - and caring about the results, because they decide our value as cooperation partner in complex, indirect interactions animals don't have.
