Since Albert Bandura conducted the Bobo doll experiments in the early '60s there's been an unshakeable (and erroneous) belief that commerical media *creates* behaviours & opinions, rather than simply supplying market demand.https://twitter.com/FraserNelson/status/1113676773361889280 …

It’s one thing for a newspaper to commission a hit job on its biggest rival, but the NY Times’s claim that Murdoch “destabilises democracy” in three continents is bordering on the hysterical. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/04/03/magazine/rupert-murdoch-fox-news-trump.html?emc=edit_fd_20190404&nl=&nlid=6274772220190404&te=1 …

How much influence does commercial media have? is an open, empirical question. My prediction would be that it has *some* influence, but a lot less than many people think.

The effect of political campaigns on voting isn't even weak, it is zero. Media effects research historically began with the unquestioned "big effects" assumption, which was shattered by viciously disappointing results.https://twitter.com/DegenRolf/status/964163240380063747 …

So, how do voters make their choices in primary elections? Is it mostly a process if sifting out the ones who make mistakes? What of candidates who go from unknown to well known?

This is about general elections, the limits of debate have likely been set by then so less room for influence. What of the influence in primaries and the selection of candidates and issues that are considered “viable” or worth discussing leading up to the general?

In America I'd suspect. It's culture specific. In Ireland it's very important "to ask for the vote". A lot of people weight it up in their final analysis

Operative word: persuasion Voter contact is a waste trying to convince someone to vote for one candidate over another. Getting non-voters out to vote is a different story.
