I do not think the new paper questions that. It just says they don't make the distinctions on the basis of the judgement of moral character. Which would be rather interesting, if replicated.

Regardless of what people say, being friends with someone with high social status is always desirable. And better hunters have better social status. Were they asked anonymously?

They actually did prefer the presence good hunters, though even that judgment is noisy. What they did not agree on was moral character, like honesty or generosity.
