That is because democracy is tyranny of majorities. 49% are unhappy they’ll get their property and rights stolen away. 51% are getting hopefully what they asked for. But harming others is a blow to most people’s happiness. Hence no change.

Humans are more susceptible to sorrow/defeat than to the converse, positive situations. It's in line with the self-preservation.

But the most vexing finding from the study summarized in the linked tweet is that being on the winning side did absolutely nothing to increase happiness.

People feel all types of losses more strongly than they do gains. This has been basic economic theory for quite a long time.

To me the more interesting part of the study is in the changing support for democracy. I know after my person has lost elections my feeling is that many of my fellow citizens are idiots
