This seems similar to my experience when my kids were little. They didn't like things that were out of the norm, they seemed really conservative, by which I mean they were not happy with change and unusual things in behavior. They loved routine.

Children love rules. All kinds of them. If you don't set rules about something, they will and then expect everyone to follow them. This isn't specific to gender-related toys and behaviour. One can be told that children like them can't read and the next day they will go and ->

smack a book out of a group-mate's hands who already had some basic reading skills (personal experience). Kids aren't gender enforcers. They are just humans who have yet to learn how to not be little assholes.
